World Environment Day 2025: Here’s How to Be a Kinder Guest on Planet Earth

World Environment Day 2025: Here’s How to Be a Kinder Guest on Planet Earth

Did you know that around 11 million tonnes of plastic end up in our lakes, rivers, and oceans every year? That’s roughly the weight of 2,200 Eiffel Towers combined. It’s hard to imagine, but it’s happening right now, all around us.

Every year on June 5th, the United Nations celebrates World Environment Day, a global moment to reflect, act, and raise awareness about protecting our planet. It’s a reminder that the Earth needs our help — and fast. From cutting down greenhouse gas emissions to restoring natural ecosystems and reducing pollution, there's a lot we need to do.

This year, World Environment Day 2025 is shining a spotlight on a critical issue: plastic pollution. With the theme #BeatPlasticPollution, the world is coming together to find ways to turn off the plastic tap — for good.

Living with Plastic: It's in Our Food, Our Water, Our Bodies

Plastic has become a part of our everyday lives — it’s cheap, easy to use, and everywhere. But that convenience comes at a big cost. From grocery bags to straws, many plastics are made for single-use, and most of them end up as waste.

What’s worse? Plastic doesn’t just disappear.

It breaks down into microplastics, tiny particles that have now made their way into the food we eat, the water we drink, and even the air we breathe.

Yes, we’re literally walking around with plastic inside us, we’ve become living carriers of microplastics!

7 Simple Ways to Reduce Plastic Pollution

We may not be able to fix everything overnight, but we can all take small steps. Here are 7 easy actions you can take today to reduce plastic pollution:

  1. Say No to Single-Use Plastics
Avoid plastic items meant to be used once and thrown away — like grocery bags, plastic wrap, disposable cutlery, straws, and coffee cup lids. Choose reusable options whenever you can. A small change in habit goes a long way.

  2. Ditch Plastic Bottles
Many bottled waters contain microplastics. Switching to a reusable bottle made of glass or stainless steel helps your health and the planet.

  3. Avoid Microbeads in Cosmetics
Check your cosmetics— many contain tiny plastic beads that end up polluting waterways. Choose natural alternatives instead.

  4. Recycle Properly
Know what you can and can’t recycle in your area. Recycling correctly helps keep plastic out of landfills and ecosystems.

  5. Support Plastic-Free Policies
Advocate for bans or regulations that limit plastic use. Your voice matters — locally, nationally, and globally.

  6. Choose Glass or Metal Packaging
Pick products packaged in glass or metal, which are easier to recycle and safer for the environment.

  7. Spread the Word
Talk about plastic pollution with friends, family, and your community. Share information on social media. The more people know, the more we can change.

At Jiva Water, we believe clean, energized water should also be sustainably stored. That’s why we encourage people to move away from plastic and use eco-friendly bottles, like those made of glass or stainless steel, to reduce our collective impact.

Change Starts with Us

Solving the plastic problem won’t happen overnight, but change begins with awareness and action. When individuals, businesses, and governments work together, we can shift toward a more sustainable way of living.

That reusable water bottle in your hand may seem small, but imagine its impact multiplied by millions of people over generations. Together, we can make a difference — not just for ourselves, but for future generations.
